Do you know(你知道吗)

你了解“School”吗？

school是我们再熟悉不过的地方了，不过，你们了解“school”这个词吗？它除了作“学校”外，还可以和其它单词组合在一起，表达一些其它的意思。不信，那就来瞧瞧：

    schoolboy 男学生      schoolgirl 女学生

    schoolbook 教科书     schooldays 求学时代

    schooltime 上课时间   schoolfee 学费

    “school”真让人大开眼界，可是“a school of fish”又是什么意思呢？原来“school”还有另外一种意思“鱼群”，“a school of fish”就是“一群鱼”。

“年”的传说

过春节（The Spring Festival）的时候，大家一定很高兴吧！我们都知道过春节又叫过年，可你们知道“年”是怎么来的吗？

传说，“年”是一种丑恶的独角怪兽，它张着血盆大口，十分凶猛可怕，每到除夕夜（Lunar New Year's Eve）便出来吃人。这时，人们就穿红衣（red clothes)，点火把（torches）,放爆竹（firecrackers），齐心协力围攻怪兽。

“年”因为怕响、怕红、怕火，只有惊慌地逃走。于是人们相互道喜，并拿出丰盛的食物一起庆祝。后来这些逐渐变成了过年贴春联（Spring Festival couplets)、放鞭炮、吃年夜饭、相互拜年等习俗。
